L’affaire Schwarzbard : histoire et littérature
Cours en ligne annuel de niveau avancé avec Tal Hever-Chybowski
Le 25 juin 1926, dans le quartier latin, Sholem Schwarzbard, horloger, poète yiddish et militant anarchiste, assassina Simon Petlioura, chef de l’armée ukrainienne de 1917 à 1920. Ce dernier avait été considéré responsable des pogromes contre les Juifs les plus violents avant le Génocide nazi. Ce cours sera consacré aux aspects historiques et littéraires de l’affaire Schwarzbard. Nous étudierons des documents, des articles de journaux, mais aussi des textes littéraires yiddish ayant trait à l’attentat commis par Schwarzbard, les événements historiques qui l’ont causé, ainsi que son procès en 1927. En lisant les textes d’Elye Tsherikover, de Dovid Bergelson, d’Alter Kacyzne, de Sholem Schwarzbard et d’autres auteurs, nous tenterons de répondre à cette question : dans quelle mesure la littérature s’inspire-t-elle des événements historiques et dans quelle mesure l’histoire fait-elle écho aux représentations littéraires ?

The Schwarzbard Affair in History and Literature
On June 25, 1926, in the Latin Quarter, Sholem Schwarzbard, watchmaker, Yiddish poet and anarchist activist, assassinated Simon Petliura, commander of the Ukrainian army from 1917 to 1920. The latter has been considered responsible for the most violent pogroms against the Jews prior to the Nazi Genocide. This course will focus on the historical and literary aspects of the Schwarzbard case. We will study documents, newspaper articles, and Yiddish literary texts related to Schwarzbard’s attack, the historical events that caused it, and his trial in 1927. By reading texts by Elye Tsherikover, Dovid Bergelson, Alter Kacyzne, Sholem Schwarzbard and others, we will attempt to answer the question: to what extent does literature draw inspiration from historical events and, on the other hand, to what extent does history echo literary representations?
The course will take place entirely in Yiddish.
Thirty 90-minute sessions (September 2021 – June 2022), on Zoom. The course starts on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.
Membership at the Paris Yiddish Center 2021-2022 is required to attend classes.
